Alice Dafnis of Stevensville, Maryland passed away peacefully in her home on July 26th, 2012 surrounded by loved ones. During her final weeks she was visited by friends and family members whom she loved very much. She was blessed with an extraordinary life of 98 years.
She was born on October 19, 1913 to Greek immigrants George and Helen (Kotsones) Politz. She was a mother, a housewife and operated a hair salon in her home. She married Peter Dafnis in 1933, and together they later owned the Dafnis Furniture Appliance store in Arbutus, Maryland.
Alice and Pete moved to Long Point Road in Grasonville in 1979, where they enjoyed many wonderful years together. In 2005 she moved to an apartment attached to her granddaughter Melissa’s house in Stevensville.
Alice loved to travel and enjoyed visiting many countries around the world with family and friends including Italy, Greece, Turkey, China, Egypt and more. She was a loyal memeber of the Chirst Episcopal Church in Stevensville. She was an accomplished duplicate bridge player, and volunteered as a bridge teacher at the Kent Island Senior Center up until just last year. Also an avid gardener, she received many compliments on her beautiful plants and flowers over the years.
She is survived by her son James Dafnis & his wife Elaine, daughter Ellen Wischhusen and her husband Richard; nephew Richard Politz & his wife Bonnie; 5 grandchildren: Deborah Dafnis Townsend, Melissa Dafnis, Carl Wischhusen, Andrea Wischhusen Roberts & Glen Wischhusen; 7 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and her cat Lilly. She was predeceased by her husband Peter Dafnis, brother Will Politz and sister Betty Politz.
She was a wonderful matriarch and shared her generosity, love and kindness with all of her family and friends. She will be deeply missed.
A visitation will be held at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester on Tuesday July 31st from 6 to 8 pm. A church service will be held on Wednesday August 1st at 10 am at Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville, where a reception will follow. Interment be held at 2:30PM in Woodlawn Cemetery in Baltimore Maryland.
