Ernest M. Smith of Centreville, MD died at home on June 11, 2014. He was 92. Mr. Smith lived in Queen Anne’s County for 90 years, and was the son of the late William and Ida Smith of Grasonville, MD. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps on May 6, 1940 and was on the USS St. Louis in the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Mr. Smith was involved with 3 invasions as a member of the 1st Marine Division. He was severely wounded on Sept. 7, 1944 on Peleliu in the Palau Islands. He retired from the State of Maryland as a Senior Assessor in Queen Anne’s County. Mr. Smith was a member of: Pearl Harbor Survivors, Disabled American Veterans, VFW Post 7464, American Legion Post 18, Purple Heart Chapter 570, Marine Corps League, Moose Lodge 1520 in Easton, MD and Our Mother of Sorrows and St. Peters Catholic Churches. Mr. Smith also served as a Scout Master in Grasonville, MD. His beloved wife, Rita, died in January of 1990. He is survived by his sons, Charles Smith (Lois), of Selbyville, DE and Dr. Joseph Smith (Dolly),of Denton, MD; a daughter, Cecilia Lukenich (Tom), of Centreville, MD; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friends and family may visit on Sunday, June 15 from 6-8 pm at the Fellows, Helfenbien & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, MD. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, June 16 at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Centreville, MD. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Queenstown, MD. Larry Clark Bennington, 70, of Centreville, MD died at the Queen Anne’s County Hospice Center on June 13, 2014. Larry was born on April 1, 1944, the son of the late Lansing Clark and Elizabeth Anders Bennington. He grew up in Easton and was a graduate of Easton High School, and resided in Easton until 1968, when he moved to Queen Anne’s County. During the course of his career, he worked in trucking, farming and carpentry until his retirement in 2005. Larry enjoyed rabbit hunting, was a fan of NASCAR and baseball, and enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Mary Frances “Marty” Bennington; his children: Janice Enfield (Ken), Lisa Palmatary (Jimmy), and Glen Lynch (Theresa), all of Easton, and Karen O’Neal (Mark) of Centreville; a sister, Barbara Gannon of Church Hill; and grandchildren: Amanda Palmatary, Elizabeth Taylor and Emily Peet. He was preceded in death by a grandson, James Clark Palmatary. A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, June 17 at Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville. Mamie May Coleman of Easton died June 13, 2014 with her family at her side at The Pines in Easton, MD. She was 91. Born on September 1, 1922 in Queenstown, MD the daughter of the late Carroll Pinder and Minne May Cox. She attended Centreville High School. Mrs. Coleman operated the Chesapeake Motel & Restaurant in Grasonville, MD and also worked as a substitute teacher for Queen Anne’s County Schools. In 1980 she began working for the Comptroller of Maryland in the income tax division. Additionally she was a hostess at the Ebb Tide Restaurant in Chester, MD. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Stevensville, MD, the Kent Island United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women’s Circle. Mrs. Coleman loved to read Danielle Steel’s books and enjoyed watching Dancing with the Stars and the Bachelor. While in the care of the Pines, she served as Vice President of the Patient Council, she was a member of the Red Hatters, Wednesday evening Book Club, Boom Whackers Band, Pines Uplifting Choir and an active participant and contributor to the Social Activities. She is survived by her daughter Victoria Smoot (Walter)of Stevensville, MD a son Paul Coleman (Dawn) of Easton, MD; brother Irving Pinder of Queenstown, MD; sisters Edith Jackson of Annapolis, MD and Pauline Rent of Parkton, MD. Five grandchildren; Linda LeCrone(David), Jackie Crutchley(Ronnie); Walt Smoot, II(Kitty); Michelle Edge and Erin Coleman-Cordes (Jason); ten great grandchildren; Justina Crutchley; Kristen Crutchley; Emily Crutchley; Katelyn Crutchley; Kendall Edge; Andrew Edge; Lauren Smoot; Lindsey Smoot, Avery Cordes, Mia Cordes and Great- Great Grandson Kalvin Starkey. In addition she is also survived by the kind loving staff and her friends at the Pines. She was predeceased by her husband Paul Coleman in 1997 and her daughter Charlotte Perry and Pauline Coleman. A visitation will be held Tuesday June 17, 2014 from 2PM to 4PM and 6Pm to 8PM at the Fellows, Helfenebin & Newnam Funeral Home, PA in Chester, MD. Virginia Elizabeth “Ginger” Jones of Stevensville, MD died June 13, 2014 at William Hill Manor in Easton, MD. She was 92.
Born May 28, 1922 in Baltimore, MD the daughter of the late George J. Link and Carrie Gerbrick. Ginger grew up in Baltimore. She married Arthur M. Jones, Sr. on 1940. They would reside in Arnold, Annapolis, & Matapeake on Kent Island, MD. Together they operated J&R Building for 48yrs. In addition to assisting with the business operations Ginger was an accomplished seamstress and devoted homemaker. Her husband predeceased her in 2007. Ginger was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother. She was a member of the Arnold Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and was an active member of the local homemakers club. After moving to Kent Island she became an active member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester, MD. It was very rare not to see Ginger at a church event, function, Sunday school or service. She organized the church Mother Daughter Banquet for 39 years and was active with the Methodist Women and various church other activities.
She is survived by her son Arthur M. Jones, Jr and his wife Willa Mae of Stevensville, MD, a daughter Lenora D. Kessinger of Stevensville, MD;. Four Grandchildren; Karen Booze (Harry) of Chester, SSG Frederick Kessinger, Sr. (Heidi) of Salisbury, and Stephanie Booze (Daniel) of Stevensville; & Arthur Murphy Jones (Laura) of Ridgley. Ten great grandchildren; SGT Frederick Kessinger, Jr., Lorynn Kessinger, Maura Booze, Mikayla Booze, Arthur Mitchell Jones, Cameron Booze, Sydney Booze, Aaron Jones, Breanna Gray Butler and Michael Sandoe. In addition to husband she was predeceased by her son in law Douglas Kessinger and her siblings Dan Link, Evelyn Marshall, George Link, Albert Link & Irene Wilson Lathroum.
A funeral service will be held 11AM on Wednesday June 18, 2014 at the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester, MD where family and friends may visit on Tuesday June 17, 2014 from 2PM to 4PM and 6PM to 8PM. Interment will follow the service in Kingsley Cemetery in Chester, MD. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Kent Island United Methodist Church P.O. Box 308 Chester, MD 21619

Catherine Ann “Cathy” Finlay of Chestertown, MD died on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 47. Born on September 11, 1966 in Ohio, she was the daughter of Samuel J. Finlay of Gaithersburg, MD and the late Priscilla Killeen Finlay. Cathy graduated from Walter Johnson High School where the ceremony was held at the Kennedy Center. She worked with the National Institute of Health in the Navy Hospital Cafeteria and at Chester River Hospital Center as an administrative office assistant. She resided with Kent Center since the early 90’s. Cathy also helped with the Kent Center’s store, Hidden Treasures, in Chestertown, MD. She attended Sunday school at the Chestertown Baptist Church. Cathy was instrumental in beginning a newspaper in her school that was featured on national television. Prior to her illness, she was active with the Special Olympics where she won many medals in Swimming, Bowling, and Basketball. Cathy loved horse races, had a great sense of humor and an infectious smile and laugh. In addition to her father and her step-mother, Jeane Finlay, she is survived by two sisters, Pat Weil and her husband Rich of Ashland, OH, and Sue Gourley and her husband Rick of Northbrook, IL, a brother, David Finlay of Sandy Spring, MD, and six nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 11:00 am at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. Chestertown, MD where a reception will follow in the Dogwood Reception Center. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The Kent Center, Inc. 214 Scheeler Road Chestertown, MD 21620.

H. Louise Price of Stevensville, MD died on Thursday June 12, 2014 in her home. She was 85. Born August 20, 1928 in Wilmington, DE to the late Morgan and Marjorie Leager Rowan. She attended Galena High school and graduated in the class of 1945. On July 4, 1947 she married Tobin Price Sr. and resided in Massey, Md. In 1970, she and her family moved to Kent Island. Mrs. Price worked at the Bay Times and later Service Star in Chester, MD; but she primarily was home caring for her family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Price is predeceased by her husband Tobin in 2013, she is survived by her four children, Margo L. Price, Tobin E. Price, Jr. John A. Price and Clark T. Price; seven grandchildren, Brian Jordan, Cassidy Price, Claire Price, Emily G. Price, Jaret Price and Anna M. Price. There are 2 Great Grandchildren that also survive her, Taylor and Andrew Jordon. Funeral services will be held on Monday June 16, 2014 at 2pm in the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, MD. where friends and family may call after 1pm. Interment will follow the services in Massey Cemetery, Massey Md.

Easton: Gladys M. Saulsbury of Easton died on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at the University of MD Shore Medical Center at Easton. She was 83. Born in Caroline County on March 7, 1931, she was one of thirteen children of the late John Henry, Sr. and Ida Mae MacMullen States. After attending public school, she married George F. Saulsbury, Sr. on April 2, 1949. They later made their home in Easton where she worked for a number of years as a Cosmetologist Aide at Peggy’s House of Beauty and Garrett’s, before retiring in 1987. A resident of Easton for the majority of her life, she was a member of the Easton Church of the Nazarene. Her hobby was cooking. Mrs. Saulsbury is survived by five sons; George F. Saulsbury, Jr. (Helen) of Washington, VA, Tim Saulsbury (Marilyn) of Easton, Randy M. Saulsbury (Wanda) of Cordova, Chris D. Saulsbury (Kathy) of Centreville and J. Darin Saulsbury of Berlin, MD; three sisters, Marie M. Schaffer and Audrey M. Schmitt, both of Denton and D. Margaret Jump of Easton, one brother, C. Dawson States of Tucson, AZ, 19 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband George, who died on May 1, 2003, she was preceded in death by her son, J. Norman Saulsbury, who died on February 26, 1986; two sisters, Eva M. Gray and Mary Elizabeth States; six brothers, John Henry States, Jr., James I. States, Thomas W. States, G. Earl States, J. Carlton States, and W. Francis States. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 11 am at New Spring Hill Cemetery in Easton. Memorial contributions may be made to: Talbot Heart Fund or the Regional Cancer Center c/o Memorial Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 1846, Easton, MD 21601.
