Mr. Andrew Wayne Nordhoff

Andrew Wayne Nordhoff of Rock Hall, MD died on Friday, June 6, 2014. He was 36. Born on February 11, 1978 in Rock Hall, MD, he was the son of Edward “Bunky” Nordhoff, Jr of Rock Hall, MD and Bonnie D. Smith and her husband Rich of Chestertown, MD. Andy grew up on Ellendale Farm and campsite. Following High School, he graduated from University of Maryland Eastern Shore with a Bachelor’s Degree. He returned to Rock Hall where he worked with Miller’s Marine in Tolchester, MD. Andy loved his work. He also enjoyed working on small engines, reading, and his dog “Poodie”. He loved boating, kayaking, and just being outdoors. He was a good neighbor, friend and loved his family. In addition to his parents and step-father, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Wayne and Lynda Baker of Rock Hall, MD; four brothers, Jake Smith of Chestertown, MD, Daniel Nordhoff of Rock Hall, MD, Aaron Nordhoff of Elkton, MD, and Russell Nordhoff of Chestertown, MD; a daughter, Jasmine Nordhoff of Baltimore, MD, and a step-brother, Ryan Smith of Chestertown, MD. He is also survived by his loving extended family. A service will be held on Monday, June 23, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 130 Speer Road – Chestertown, MD, where relatives and friends may call one hour prior (1-2pm). A reception will follow in the dogwood reception center. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jasmine Nordhoff Scholarship Fund c/o People’s Bank 21337 Rock Hall Avenue – Rock Hall, MD 21661.

Bonnie Lee Smith, 54, of Centreville, MD died on June 15, 2014 at the Queen Anne’s County Hospice Center. Born on August 4, 1959 in Johnstown, PA, she was the daughter of Harry and Shirley High Daly. She grew up in New Jersey and, in 1978, married Carll Robert Smith. The Smiths have made their home in Centreville, MD for the last 25 years. Bonnie was a homemaker and a woman of courage and great faith. She loved working in her flower gardens and enjoyed volunteering at various community events and was a Sunday School teacher at Price Bethany United Methodist Church, as well as a volunteer with the Price Community Center. She is survived by her loving husband, Carll; her loving children: Caitlin Marie Smith and Matthew Tyler Smith, both of Centreville; brother George Daly; sisters: Debbie Hutchings, Pam Daly and Bea Hughes; and a granddaughter, Alivia A Celebration of Life with a night of music will be held at Church Hill United Methodist Church on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 7:00 pm with a reception to follow. Julius Rich of Chestertown, died on Monday, June 16, 2014 at Chester River Manor. He was 84. Born on March 30, 1930 in McColl, South Carolina to the late Fannie McColl Rich and Evans Rich. Mr. Rich married Katie Mae Jackson in Dillon, South Carolina and they had two children. Mr. Rich worked as a Roll Grinder at Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point until his retirement in 1980. They moved to Chestertown in 1977. After retirement, he worked for Drs. Harry and Susan Ross. He was an avid deer and goose hunter, fisherman and crabber; and loved his hunting dogs. He was very proud of the fact that he built his own dream home, and was a devoted Ravens and Orioles fan. Mr. Rich is survived by his wife of 62 years, Katie Mae Rich; his two daughters, Julie Mae Rich Helsel and her husband Larry Gordon, Sr., of Dundalk and Wanda Jean Rich of Chestertown; his grandchildren, Teresa Mae Heim, Anita Michelle Heim Phillips and Larry Gordon Helsel, Jr.; his great-grandchildren, Julian Heim, Emily Mae Heim and Benjamin Phillips; his siblings, Diane Rich Jackson of Goldsboro, NC, Max Rich and his wife Gloria of Goldsboro, NC, Hammer Rich of Florida,Edith Rich of Goldsboro, NC,. Shirley Long and her husband Bobby of Goldsboro, NC, Patsy Dieffenbach and her husband Barrie of Camp Hill, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Melvin Rich, Johnny Rich and Elmor Rich. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 11am at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Chestertown, where friends may call from 10am to 11am when the funeral service will begin. Burial will be at Chester Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Dogwood Reception Center. Contributions may be made to Kent Hospice Foundation, 100 Brown St. Chestertown, MD 21620 or to a charity of your choice.

Seaford: Charlotte P. Betts formerly of Trappe, MD, passed peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Methodist Manor House in Seaford, DE. She was 95. Charlotte was born on April 8, 1919 in Trappe, MD. She was the daughter of the late Francis S. Penn and Florence E. Henry Penn. Mrs. Betts is survived by a daughter, Carol B. Carey, grandchildren; Michelle Kane (Chris), Michael J. Carey (Kimberly) and a great granddaughter Ashleigh L. Carey, who is attending Temple University in the Physical Therapy Program. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Betts. She lived a rich and full life. She is extremely loved and will be so very missed by all. She was and will forever remain a huge presence in our lives. Our sadness at this time does not compare to the love and compassion that this wonderful lady has shown us through all her 95 years. She will finally join Pop, who has been patiently waiting. We all love you GG. A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 13, 2014 at 11 am at White Marsh Cemetery in Trappe, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Trinity United Methodist Church, 112 High St., Salisbury, MD 21801 or the charity of your choice. Arrangements are being handled by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Easton.
